In theory, the holiday season is about spending time with your loved ones and creating lasting memories. There is a “magic” in the air, a feeling of warmth and compassion for our fellow human beings, an urge to give back and do good. However, sometimes the holidays can become a stressful time. Between the pressure of finding that perfect gift mixed with lots of holiday obligations, it can become overwhelming. If we don’t stop and take a look around to enjoy the holiday season, they’ll be gone before we know it.
The holiday season is also an important time for businesses, particularly small businesses. This is not the time to take a social media hiatus because people will be flocking to social media for ideas and inspiration and to wish family and friends good tidings. With the amount of information people have access to 24/7, staying on top of your digital marketing is crucial. In the current digital age it’s more important than ever for companies to be present at the point that influences, drives discovery and ultimately improves sales.
Here are four tips to help you get your message out there:
#1 It’s Called the “Holiday” Season
One great thing that social media can do for a small business is to extend your customer reach to audiences outside of your local community. The whole world is a potential customer now, with many different celebrations and customs. Remember, you can play off of all of the holidays, not just the traditional ones. Create a word document, spreadsheet, or use a project management tool to keep track of what holidays you want to cover on social media.
#2 Show Your Holiday Spirit
Strong visual images will help your small business to stand out in news feeds. Facebook and Pinterest are the social media platforms customers prefer to look at for inspiration, possibly because they are both visual platforms. “Deck the Halls” of your business’s profile page to reflect the spirit of the season. Use videos, animated GIFs, and images paired with relevant content to grab attention.
#3 “Tis The Season for Giving Back
Show your customers how much you appreciate them by giving them an incentive; a one-day-only or limited-quantity sale, B1G1 free, special discounts or holiday coupons are a few examples. Start a loyalty program, if you don’t already have one in place. Your customers will be grateful for getting a deal and you’ll be grateful for increased sales. Everybody wins!
#4 Share the True Meaning of the Season
The “giving” doesn’t have to end with your customers and clients…you can also give back to the community. Share your company’s good deeds with your audience to draw them in and evoke emotion. Invite people into your business’s world. For example, create content showing all employees working together to help a family in need or donating time at soup kitchen. Or showcase employees favorite holiday memories to trigger feelings of nostalgia in your audience. When creating impactful content for social media remember, it’s all about storytelling, and doing it in an authentic and personal way.
